Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington is organized to provide for the needs of the ill in the Jewish Community, with compassion and loving kindness, as guided by Torah law. Bikur Cholim assists patients and their families by:
- organizing volunteers to visit and assist the patients and their families
- facilitating access to community resources, when needed
- enhancing awareness of health care professionals about the particular needs of Jewish patients
- educating the community in the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim
Bikur Cholim services are available to patients who live in or travel to the Greater Washington area for medical treatment. We have been instrumental in assisting patients and their families at NIH (National Institutes of Health), Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center etc.
Please contact us if you are coming to the area, or know of a patient/family who will be here. We would like to offer our help.

Dr. Norman Blumenthal is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Lawrence, NY. The Director of Bereavement and Crisis Intervention Services for Chai Lifeline, Dr. Blumenthal also serves as Educational Director of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kollel Elyon and Semikha Honors Program at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. He is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Education of CAHAL, a partnership of 10 Jewish schools providing special education services. In addition, Dr. Blumenthal serves as the Coordinator of Group Psychotherapy Training for Interns and Residents at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System and consultant to TOVA, a mentoring program for disenfranchised teens. He is a past Vice President of NEFESH (The International Network of Orthodox Mental Health Professionals).

If you are a resident of the Greater Washington metro area, your help is needed! We are looking for volunteers to assist in the following areas:
- visiting the sick
- hospital food boxes
- Phone squad
- clerical work
- delivery services
- preparing food
- babysitting
- special events
- transportation
- translating
- computer work
If you are currently a patient or family of a patient and Shabbos is coming, you may be interested in checking our Shabbat Emergency Box locations at local hospitals. Each portable box contains certified kosher packaged food and Shabbat provisions to be used in cases of emergency admittance on Shabbat.
BIKUR CHOLIM OF GREATER WASHINGTON has some wheelchairs and walkers available for loan. Please contact us if you may need these items. This will be addressed on a first come, first served basis.
